Polk County Democrats Central Committee Minutes

June 12, 2008

Salem Electric Building, West Salem, Oregon

Chair Alan Holland called the meeting to order at 7:07 PM.  Present were:  Linda E. Williams, Carrol Easterday, Kathy Smits, David N. Papen, Peter Wells, Jackie Pierce, Ross Swartzendruber, Timothe Seelbach, Patrick Mulligan, Ron Dodge, Marylyn May, Dick May, Jason Brown, Robert Urban, James Atkin, John Westall, Lisanne Pearcy, Alan Holland, Gloria Holland, Darci and Paul Kugler.

Corrections to the agenda were made.  Jackie Pierce moved and it was seconded to approve the revised agenda.  Motion passed.

Ross Swartzendruber moved and it was seconded to accept the minutes of the May 8, 2008 meeting.  Motion passed.

Committee Reports:

            Executive:

                        Alan Holland reported that Kevin Nortness will run in the Senate District 12 race against Brian Boquist.

                        Ross Swartzendruber has been hired to work on the Jason Brown campaign.

                        At the 5th District convention, held June 7, 2008 in Salem, Walter Dawson of Falls City was elected as the 5th District Obama Delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

                        The Oregon State Democratic Convention will be held in Monmouth on June 21, beginning at 1:00 PM.

                        The Democratic Party of Oregon has asked Polk County Democrats to sell food and refreshments at the state convention. Peter Wells, Timothe Seelbach, and David Papen volunteered to form a committee to work on getting volunteers and to organize the logistics of providing refreshments at the state convention.

            The DPO National Canvass Day is July 26.

            July 7 is the deadline for petition gatherers to acquire enough signatures to get initiatives on the November ballot.

            Financial:

                        Linda Williams reported that the recent Pentacle Theater benefit performance of Betty the Yeti garnered $3385 in gross profits, and $1765.99 in net profits to come to the Polk County Democrats.

Events:

            Kathy Smits reported that the phone tree needs to be used only once a month.

            Kathy also reported that Airlie Winery will hold a fundraiser for the Polk County Democrats on September 14th. People will be asked to bring light snacks.  Some candidates are expected to be in attendance.

Polk County Commission Report:

            Commissioner Ron Dodge reported that AFSME Local 173 and Polk County agreed on a contract for the county employees.  The contract is written very favorably for union members.

            It was suggested that a forum be set up to hear Aaron Felton and Stan Butterfield, who are running for Polk County District Attorney.

            Business:

            Alan Holland reported on the findings of the endorsement committee.  A chart of the findings was available for attendees to study.

            Lisanne Pearcy moved and it was seconded that the Polk County Democratic Central Committee endorse Jeff Merkely for US Senate and Kurt Schrader for 5th Congressional District Representative.  The motion passed.

            It was suggested that the literature that goes out from Polk County say that people are encouraged to vote the entire Democratic Party ticket.

            Lisanne Pearcy moved and it was seconded that the Polk County Democratic Central Committee agrees to provide its contact (aka "Friends") list to endorse candidates, with the understanding that the list is confidential and is to be kept confidential.  The list is to be used for the candidate's campaign only and not disseminated further. (An acceptance form will be provided to the candidates, and an "op-out" provision will appear with each e-mail sent to said "Friends".)  Motion passed with unanimous voice vote.

 

            Litter Patrol:

            Dick May reported that Fred Brown is going to talk to the State about mowing our designated litter patrol area. Fred asked to put the patrol off until the last weekend in July.  Dick will work with Fred on the date, which could occur mid-week.

            Other:

            Jackie Pierce asked central committee members to support an endeavor to allow workers to form a union by signing a petition to do so.  Central Committee members were asked to sign a post card in support of this effort.

            Lisanne Pearcy moved and it was seconded that the Polk County Central Committee endorse Barack Obama as candidate for President of the United States.  Motion passed.

 

            Jason Brown reported that he is getting endorsements and that he will be speaking at Kwan's Restaurant in  Salem at noon on  Wednesday, June 18.

            Jackie Pierce reported that she recently participated in the "Bush-McCain Challenge" in downtown Salem, which occurs once a week during the summer.

The next Central Committee meeting is scheduled to be held on Thursday, July 10, 7:00 PM at Christ Church in Monmouth, Oregon.  Social time will begin at 6:30 PM.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 PM.
