Polk County Democrats Central Committee Minutes

May 8, 2008, 7:00 PM

Chair Alan Holland introduced the following speakers and the positions for which they are running in the current election:

            Andrew Foster......................5th Congressional District

            Jason Brown........................Oregon House District 23

            Westley West.......................Oregon House District 23

            Aaron Felton.......................Polk County District Attorney

            Josie Jimarez-Howard............representing the Barack Obama campaign

Alan Holland called the business meeting to order at 8:11 PM.

 Present:  Carrol Easterday, Linda E. Williams, Timothe Seelbach, David N. Papen, Kari Henifin, Andy Foster, Dick May, Marylyn May,Kathy Smits, Pat Jaffer, John Westall, Wesley West, Richard Riggs, Aaron Felton, Michelle Felton, Jason Brown,, Darci and Paul Kugler, Marianna Timshel, Joanne Timshel, Elizabeth Schulte, Ross Swartzendruber, Josie Jimarez-Howard, Jackie Pierce. Suzi Price, Gloria Holland.

Alan credited Dick May for his good work on the Liter Patrol.

Rich Riggs moved and it was seconded that the minutes of the last meeting be accepted.  Motion passed.

Committee Reports:

            Executive: (A written report will be included with the record of the minutes).

                        Alan Holland introduced Ross Swartzendruber as the new Polk County Democrat Candidate Development and Support Chair.

                        Alan will call Darci and Paul Kuglar regarding writing in a name as a PCP.  Attendees were encouraged to call the Mayor of Independence to encourage him to ask people to put names on the ballot as PCP's.

            Financial:

                        Linda Williams distributed and discussed the financial report. People are encouraged to continue selling tickets to Pentacle's Betty the Yeti.

            Events:

                        Kathy Smits reported that an event has been planned for September 14, 2008 at Airlie Winery, 1:30-4:00 as a potluck/fundraiser.

New business:

            Ross Swartzendruber, Candidate Committee Chair, reported on a candidate contribution proposal coming from the Candidate Committee. 

            Jackie Pierce moved and it was seconded that the PCD Central Committee endorse Rich Riggs and Jason Brown for House Districts 20 and 23 respectively.

In light of the endorsement process voted on at the last meeting, Jason Brown brought forth a friendly amendment  stating that Jason Brown would receive money and an endorsement only after winning the May 20 primary election.  That amendment was approved by Jackie Pierce. (It should be noted that in this primary election, Jason Brown faces a Democratic opponent, while Rich Riggs faces no opponent.)  Motion passed.

Suzi Price moved and it was seconded that the Polk County Democratic Central Committee allocate $1100 to the PCD's endorsed candidates in House Districts 20 and 23.  The motion passed.

Jackie Pierce moved and it was seconded that the PCD-CC endorse Lloyd Chapman for mayor of Salem.  The motion passed.

Rich Riggs moved and it was seconded that the PCD-CC formally approve sending $32 to Linn County for a Democratic Forum recently held in Linn County.  The motion passed.

Suzi Price reported that she is not going to be working as coordinator of the fairs after this year, and the PCD's will need four people to take over the job:

            1 General Coordinator

            1 Western Days Coordinator

            1 Dallas Summerfest Coordinator

            1 Polk County Fair Coordinator

           

            Suzi further reported that booth-sitting time requires about 300 hours.  Additionally, this year, we want to register voters, and these volunteers could be people who are not sitting at the booths. Suzi's request was that CC members ask friends to participate in volunteering at the fairs.
