Polk County Central Committee Minutes
August 9, 2007, at the home of Kris Heath, Rickreall, Oregon
A pot-luck-social was held from 5:30-7:00 Pm
Chair Alan Holland began the meeting at 6:52 PM.
Alan introduced Brenna Monihan from NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon. Brenna addressed the following topics:
- Invited the committee to join any NARAL events.
- Explained that NARAL is pro-choice, not pro-abortion.
- For further information see the Guttmacher Institute on the web.
- Encouraged people to volunteer at the State Fair,
- Extended invitations to a NARAL event on September 8, 2007.
Alan introduced Autumn Wilburn, representative of the Democratic Party of Oregon. Autumn discussed the following topics:
- Training Programs
- State Fair volunteerism
- The Oregon Summit, in October in Central Oregon
- Endorsement of Measures 49 and 50
- A Spring Primary Election
- Improved data base
- Target "lazy" Democrats and those new to Oregon
- Work to get out the vote and build the county Democratic Party
Autumn distributed a packet which included:
- Volunteer Job Description
- TIPS on building a volunteer Base
- Recruiting Democratic Party Volunteers
- Developing Democratic Volunteers: Leadership Development
Suzy Price asked that the county be included in the state website.
Fred Brown moved and Jason Brown seconded that the agenda be approved as written. The Motion passed.
Jason Brown moved and Suzy Price seconded that the approval of the March-July minutes be tabled until the next month's meeting. The Motion passed.
Treasurer's Report:
Suzy Price reported for Linda Williams, treasurer, who was absent. To date the account shows $4501.14 in Savings, $2150.82 in Checking, totaling $6651.96.
Suzy encouraged members to contribute monthly to the Democratic Party.
Suzy distributed Tentative Results of the Squantum Whiffle Fundraiser. Linda Williams will prepare a final report to be presented at the next meeting. Suzy reminded people to spend responsibly and to turn receipts in to Linda Williams within a week of purchase.
Suzy Price moved and John Westall seconded that the Central Committee and the Process and Rules Committee suggest financial and budgeting policies and procedures as a priority on consultation with the Treasurer and Committee Chairs, reporting to the Central Committee in October. The Motion passed.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Executive Committee:
Alan Holland reported his findings when he recently attended the Polk County Commissioners Meeting where he posed the question to each commissioner: "Where do you stand on Measure 49?"
Fundraising Committee:
Fred Brown reported on the success of the Squantum Whiffle fundraiser and thanked the volunteers. He asked for more volunteers especially in November, when there will be a mailing and telephoning campaign.

- October 11, 7:00 PM, Salem Electric, Kate Diamond from Our Oregon, "Measure 50 - Healthy Kids

NEW BUSINESS:
LETTER TO DEMAND IMPEACHMENT:
Fred Brown moved and Jackie Pierce seconded that Jason Brown, Alan Holland and a 3rd person (TBD) write a letter demanding impeachment of George Bush and Dick Cheney. Further, this letter will be forwarded to the Federal delegation from Oregon (Darlene Hooley, et al) and to the local press including the Itemizer Observer, the Statesman Journal, and The Oregonian, and to the Democratic Party of Oregon. The Motion passed.
Jason Brown moved and Karen Green seconded that the release of the letter written to the Oregon Delegation to the media be postponed at the optional discretion of the Executive Committee. The motion failed.
MEASURES 37 and 49: Pat Wheeler gave a brief summary of the effects in Polk County of Measure 37.
John Westall moved and David Papen seconded that the Polk County Democrats endorse Measure 49. The Motion passed.
John Westall moved and Jackie Pierce seconded that the Polk County Democrats contribute $100 to the Yes on 49 Campaign. The Motion passed.
MEASURE 50:
Fred Brown moved and Dick May seconded that the Polk County Democrats endorse Measure 50 (the Healthy Kids Initive). The Motion passed.
VOLUNTEER CERTIFICATES: Gloria Holland distributed certificates of thanks for volunteer efforts to several committee members .
PEACE RALLY: Truman Price reminded people of the Wednesday Peace Rallies held each week in Monmouth.
GOODBYE KAREN GREEN: Karen Green, past chair of the Polk Democratic Central Committee, announced that she and her husband will be moving from Oregon and invited the committee to a going away party at her home on August 18. The Central Committee extends its gratitude to Karen for her work during her time in Polk County. Thank you, Karen.
HIGHWAY CLEAN-UP: A highway clean-up is scheduled for Sunday, September 9 at 2:00 PM. Fred Brown has more information.
Alan Holland adjourned the meeting at 9:48 PM.
