Impeachment letter

Dear Congresswoman Hooley,

We are proud of the Oregon Democratic delegation for co-sponsoring the impeachment of Alberto Gonzales. It takes courage as well as wisdom to do what is right and necessary to defend our Constitution.

The Administration has plunged America into a crisis that can only be resolved by the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

The President, Vice President and Members of Congress are sworn to uphold the Constitution, the Supreme Law of the Land. The Framers of the Constitution created separate and balanced powers, providing checks through which each branch could curb excesses by the others, so that we might live under the rule of law instead of the rule of despots.

The Bush-Cheney administration violated this rule of law by:

Claiming the power to exempt members of the Executive branch from Congressional investigation;

Obstructing Congressional lawmaking through the misuse of signing statements;
Obstructing the performance of the justice system;
Repealing basic Constitutional Rights of Americans, including habeas corpus, through Executive Decree;

Lying in order to fraudulently wage war.

Bush and Cheney have broken their oaths of office, declaring themselves above the law and threatening to destroy the balanced government designed by the Founding Fathers. In doing so, they commit "high Crimes and Misdemeanors" as understood by the Framers of the Constitution.

The precedents being set by Bush and Cheney must not be allowed to stand. No future President of any party should wield the extraordinary powers that this administration has usurped.

Congress has sole Constitutional authority and responsibility to protect the nation from despotic acts by the Executive Branch. We therefore call upon you as our elected Representative to uphold your Constitutional oath of office by pursuing the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.
