Polk County Democrats Central Committee Minutes

October 9, 2008

Salem Electric, Salem, Oregon

Present:  Jackie Pierce, Gloria Holland, Ron Dodge, Dennis McCaffery, David Papen, Richard Riggs, Timothe Seelbach, Alan Holland, Aaron Felton.

Chair Alan Holland began the meeting at 7:02 pm.  Alan introduced Marcia Kelley, representing the Salem Transit Board.  Marcia spoke about the "Yes on 24-247 - Yes for Buses" levy which will appear on the upcoming ballot.

Richard Riggs moved and it was seconded to approve the minutes of the last meeting.  The motion passed.

Richard Riggs moved and it was seconded that the Polk County Central Committee endorse the Yes on 24-247 Transit Levy.  The motion passed.   Marcia Kelley did not ask for a financial donation from the Central Committee, but did encourage individuals to contribute to the Levy Bond on an individual basis.

REPORTS:

Gloria Holland reported that the Democrats' office in Monmouth is seeing a lot of activity. 

Alan Holland reported that the Democratic candidates at the Green Villa Farms candidate forum were well spoken, but thinly represented by Polk Co. Democrats.

Alan reported that to date, the Polk Co. Democrats have only 1,048 fewer registrants than the Polk Co. Republicans.

Alan reported that the Get-Out-the-Vote training will be held Saturday and Sunday in Marion and Polk Counties.  Alan gave a brief description of the GOTV effort.

In the absence of Treasurer, Chair Holland reported that the Polk County Democrats account held approximately $6,000, of which $3000 are currently undesignated.

Rich Riggs reported that he has had some changes in the campaign staff and that the campaign is going well.

Aaron Felton thanked the campaign volunteers who have put a great deal of effort into campaigning for him.

Ron Dodge reported that Polk County has received some timber money, which is a big relief.

Dick May requested in abstencia that the Polk County Democrats is to have a litter patrol this next week.  It was agreed to put the patrol off until after the election.  In the last year, over 180 person hours have been spent picking up litter.

ELECTION OBSERVERS:

            Dennis McCaffery reported that every state and county has a person or people to be in charge of observing the voting process.  Dennis asked people to be at the court house to watch the process.

            Timothe Seelbach volunteered to be at the West Salem Library from 7-8 pm on November 4 (Election night) to direct voters to Roth's Grocery, where the ballot box is located.

 NOMINATING COMMITTEE:

            Alan asked for volunteers to serve on the nominating committee, which would seek new officers to be elected in December.  Jackie Pierce suggested that post cards and newsletters be sent to Polk County Democrats informing them that nominations are open.

MEETING DAYS:

            David Papen asked if there is another day the Polk County Democrats could meet.  Mondays and third and fourth Thursdays are available.  David will research to find out which nights are available.

MOTIONS:

            Rich Riggs moved and it was seconded that the Polk County Democrats endorse Ballot Measures 54 and 55.  The motion passed.

           

            Rich Riggs moved and it was seconded that the Polk County Democratic Central Committee divide the $3000 of undesignated money to candidates, according to the pre-determined formula, as follows:

                        $1250 to Richard Riggs

                         1250 to Jason Brown

                          500 to Kevin Nortness.

            The motion passed.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 8:41.

The next meeting will be held at Christ Church in Monmouth, Oregon at 7:00 pm on November 13, 2008.
